One of the restricted trekking areas of Nepal, the Upper Mustang Trek needs the special permit and a government certified person/guide during the trek. Not a difficult trekking in Nepal, the maximum elevation you will get during the trekking is at 3800 meters above the sea level. North to Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif, Upper Mustang can be trekked in 15 days from Kathmandu and can be completed in 13 days from Pokhara. The maximum Upper Mustang Trek altitude is 3700 meters above the sea level at Lo Mangthang.
Upper Mustang Permit Details
The major permits needed for the trek are: restricted area permit of US$ 500 per person for the 10 days and ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) of US$ 30 per person. The permits of Upper Mustang trek can be issued at either in Kathmandu or in Pokhara. The documents needed for the permits are; a valid passport with at least of 20 days Nepal visa.
Weather and Best Seasons to Trek
Upper Mustang is a rain shadowed area of Nepal. The best seasons to trek Upper Mustang are Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November). But the Upper Mustang Tour package can be done in Monsoon as well. Trekking Mustang is winter is not recommended due to the heavy snowfall. The Upper Mustang weather is in between of 5 to 15 degree Celsius in three seasons (Spring, Autumn and Monsoon). Though the temperature of Upper Mustang goes to minus in the winter time.
